Poised on the unspoilt shores of Lake Maggiore, an idyllic hotel with a spa and infinity pool - includes breakfast, dinner, welcome drink, and more
  • Lakeside charm with history: Lake Maggiore is the ‘local’s lake’ – quieter than Garda and Como, but beloved by Italians and equally as beautiful. Set right on the shore, Hotel de Charme occupies an undiscovered corner in a historic building that started life as a ceramic factory; now, it’s a sleek and modern hotel with top-notch amenities, including a botanical garden.

  • Soul-soothing views and laid-back living: Set behind the arched stone windows are polished marble floors, black and white photos and blue hints that reflect the lake beyond. The view is best enjoyed from the infinity pool, but just try to tear yourself away from the spa with its Finnish sauna and steam room. The gym overlooks the water, too.

  • Mediterranean flavours and rustic hospitality: Unsurprisingly, the restaurant is popular with locals as well as guests. Perhaps it’s the nightly aperitivo, the breakfast buffet of hot dishes and Italian cakes, or the tempting menu of local favourites made with a twist.

How to get there

Hotel de Charme Laveno sits on the tranquil shores of Lake Maggiore, in an unspoilt corner that’s quieter than other towns around the lake. From Laveno port it’s just a 15-minute ferry crossing to Intra, from which a variety of connecting ferry services make for the Borromean Islands and Stresa. Lugano airport is 35 kilometres away, while Milan airport is 40 kilometres to the south.

Viale De Angeli, 46, 21014 Laveno-Mombello, Italy

Spanning both Italy and Switzerland, Lake Maggiore is one of the largest lakes in the Alps – a shimmering, inky blue slicing through the regions of Lombardy, Piedmont and Swiss Ticino. Small villages and sleepy towns are scattered around the lakeshore, where soothing waters lap up against dense stone walls and hydrangea-filled gardens. Water taxis help you to avoid the crowded roads of peak summer, and the Mottarone cable car offers a pleasant diversion with bird’s-eye view of Maggiore and its six neighbouring lakes, the Po Valley and the surrounding mountains.
